18 And it came to pass that they formed a secret combination, even as they of old; which combination is most abominable and wicked above all, in the sight of God;
19 For the Lord worketh not in secret combinations, neither doth he will that man should shed blood, but in all things hath forbidden it, from the beginning of man.
20 And now I, Moroni, do not write the manner of their oaths and combinations, for it hath been made known unto me that they are had among all people, and they are had among the Lamanites.
How weird would it be to have the oaths they took that were evil in our scriptures. Like a How To guide to bad stuff.
21 And they have caused the destruction of this people of whom I am now speaking, and also the destruction of the people of Nephi.
22 And whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain, until they shall spread over the nation, behold, they shall be destroyed; for the Lord will not suffer that the blood of his saints, which shall be shed by them, shall always cry unto him from the ground for vengeance upon them and yet he avenge them not.
Could that be Iraq and other nations with large terrorist groups?
23 Wherefore, O ye Gentiles, it is wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you, that thereby ye may repent of your sins, and suffer not that these murderous combinations shall get above you, which are built up to get power and gain—and the work, yea, even the work of destruction come upon you, yea, even the sword of the justice of the Eternal God shall fall upon you, to your overthrow and destruction if ye shall suffer these things to be.
24 Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; or wo be unto it, because of the blood of them who have been slain; for they cry from the dust for vengeance upon it, and also upon those who built it up.
This is pretty powerful. You are COMMANDED to awake and come out of it. The image I get is a person coming out of being brainwashed.

15 Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter.
It's kind of sad that he didn't make it, but he probably saw it much sooner this way.
16 I was left thus, without being able to decide whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to some previous appearing, or whether I should die and thus see his face.
17 I believe the coming of the Son of Man will not be any sooner than that time.
18 Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.
19 And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.
I LOVE this. I am striving to learn more and more on the topics I think are important. It feels so good when I am learning.

interesting that the book of Mormon Gadiantons rise the strongest when times are peaceful and plentiful then they rise up and destroy the government and take over. That spells the end of the times of peace. It happens right before the Lord comes to the Americas.
Intelligence is good thing to have. But not so much that you forget that God is overall and smarter then anything else.
the oaths they make are ones that bind you to their control
it's not the words or such, it's more like "go and steal this money from this place and we'll let you be a part of our club" to stay in the "club" you have to continue to do bad things.
I've been thinking of this a while. I had the above idea from movies and such, but it sort of felt like a light switch went off. After that, I see it quite a bit. It's the most binding. It's hard to get out of because they'll be able to turn you in, or worse.
I think the Book of Mormon "as is" is quite a how-to book on secret combinations. and moreso how much better it is to not work in anything that even comes close to secret combinations.
I was talking with a friend once. She told me she had a sleep over with some other girls when she was young. One of the girls had something she wanted to share with the others, but made them swear not to tell it, then taught them how to masturbate. When this friend told me that I thought immediately of these secret oaths... makes sense doesn't it?
Wow, that is a crazy thing to learn from a slumber party! I bet I know who that friend was... But you are right, it's a latter-day secret oath.

:) it wasn't Daena if that's who you thought of... come to think of it, from what she's told me, she's been in much worse than this. this friend was LDS, a recent convert when I met her.
